What is The Kickstand?
The Gainesville Community Bicycle Project, aka The Kickstand, is Gainesville's newest community center. At our collective bicycle shop, you will gain access to tools, parts, and knowledgeable volunteers who will help you learn to build, fix, and maintain your bicycle.
Bicycles are empowering! With transportation comes opportunities, and anyone--regardless of age, race and/or gender--can enjoy the benefits of bicycle ownership. We hope to pair up recycled bicycles with those who need them, and engender a spirit of sharing and community around these two-wheeled wonders!
While the volunteer-run bicycle shop is our initial effort, our intentions include a wider range of community services. You don't have to know much about bicycles to be helpful:
- Improving driver-awareness of bicycles (visibility)
- Earn-a-bike programs (especially in conjunction with area elementary schools)
- Bicycle Safety workshops
- ...and more!
Furthermore, we hope to make our space available through relationships with other community resources such as the CMC and the Books For Prisoners program. If you have an idea for a community resource that might work with us, please contact us.
How You Can Help
- Volunteer. Fill out our volunteer application and submit it to Amber Barnes. We need people to:
- Provide support for events including shows and alley cats. Man a checkpoint or check IDs at the door.
- Help clean and organize the shop
- Take a 2+ hour shift to help keep our doors open as much as possible
- Help build shelving, workbenches
- Solicit for donations
- Donate! That old bicycle that you're not using anymore can go to someone who needs it to get to work. Better yet, volunteer your time here and we'll help you fix it up so you can ride it to work.
- Your donations of money will help us buy the tools and consumables (tires, patch kits, grease, etc.) that we need to keep the shop running.
- Attend our volunteer meetings and learn more about getting involved.
Mission
The Gainesville Community Bicycle Project, The Kickstand, aims to establish a non-profit organization that will provide free or inexpensive bicycle-related services to all persons without discrimination. Since we believe that the bicycle represents the most affordable, healthy, and environmentally sound form of transportation and recreation, we seek to encourage people to learn to maintain a bicycle themselves and to use it in a responsible manner. We will provide assistance in acquiring a reliable bicycle and scheduled access to knowledgeable volunteers and quality tools. It is our belief that by providing these services we can help build neighborhood involvement and create greater paths for communication and cooperation.
501(c)(3)
The Gainesville Community Bicycle Project is currently working to establish 501(c)(3)/non-profit status. If you can volunteer knowledge or time to this effort, please contact us.
